Joy was a stunningly pretty Scottish girl from Aberdeen. She worked as a sales assistant in a large bookshop and kept in trim by swimming and dancing.
She appeared only six times, which puts her way down towards the bottom of the rankings. But she is included in the Model Profiles for two reasons, two very good reasons.
The first is that she wore fully fashioned nylons in every shoot she did – which is only to be expected really, as she modelled in the late 1950s and early ‘60s when most women wore them; the second is that the sequences of her are some of the very best ever to appear in the ToCo titles if you have a fetish for the expansive, semi-transparent, nylon underwear hidden away under the knee-length skirts and dresses of the day (let’s be magnanimous and try and forget the sequence with her wearing directoire knickers, eh?). And that was what Spick and Span and the others were all about – getting a quick, accidental flash (or a long, lingering leer) of those delights you weren’t supposed to see.
Those photos should bear a placard with the same request that the great Henry Moore, who believed sculpture is as tactile as it is visual, insisted was placed on his works, to the horror of many museums and art galleries – “Please Do Touch!”
