Born Rochelle Whaler in Paddington, both Rochelle’s parents were in show business − but her mother died not long after she was born and she was brought up in an orphanage. In 1950, when she was 16, she married Gerald Convamore Lofting in Hammersmith. A year later, a son was born – Erik Viking Lofting, so perhaps there was some Danish blood in her husband. The marriage didn’t last long and father and son emigrated to Australia in 1962. In the same year, Rochelle married again, to Maurice L. Slater in Westminster.
