The No 1 ToCo Model for the first day of the year. Some of my favourite pictures below.
Susan was by far the most prolific model used in Town and Country Publications (ToCo). She made her debut at the age of 23 and, as far as we know, was the only model ever asked to write the accompanying copy for a photo series (The Breezes and I in Spick 132 from November 1964).
She was said to come from Kent and was, variously, secretary, early TV adverts model, housewife, and shorthand typist who enjoyed dancing, fencing, decorating and cordon bleu cookery. It was a rare month when she wasn't featured in Spick, Span or Beautiful Britons, such was her popularity and attraction. Furthermore, she was seen in no other magazines − a promise made by the editor of the magazines, R.T. Staples. She also modelled in directoire knickers and (what was probably) her own old gymslip. There are no pictures of her wearing fully fashioned stockings, but there are some shots of her in tights – and, in BB 139, she gives a tantalising glimpse of the hem of a girdle.
